Mother's Day Statement

On Mother’s Day, we pause to celebrate and affirm motherhood. We acknowledge this annual holiday is not celebratory for all. This can be a very painful moment for various reasons and we hold the hurt, trauma, loss, and the like in this moment along with the many ways Mother’s Day is also filled with joy and thanksgiving.

CRS along with the GAPA Coalition are remembering those mothers and families at-large mourning the loss of their children due to police brutality and the threats to human life due to racialized violence via police force. Mayor Lori Lightfoot committed to supporting the GAPA Ordinance as a candidate for Mayor and regrettably, she has fallen short in keeping that promise in solidarity with the communities across Chicago demanding eradication of violence by those sworn to serve and protect. We lift up the narratives of the mothers who speak on behalf of their children from the grave. We lift up the narratives of the mothers that speak with urgency for the children who are still with us so that they may experience a future with promise and hope that their lives matter.

Mayor Lightfoot—as a trailblazing, bold and courageous mother—we call on you to support the GAPA ordinance in the spirit of this holiday with an urgency of right now. Please keep your promise and know that the community deserves an opportunity to be a fundamental influence and voice in police oversight in Chicago. I honor those wailing mothers on this day, will you join me and the CRS community in this call to action?

We invite the CRS Community to join us in calling on the Mayor and City Officials. Take action now to have Chicago City Council pass GAPA on May 20! Call the Mayor’s office and post to social media this week. CRS along with the GAPA Coalition have launched an urgent Mother’s Day message to Mayor Lori Lightfoot and City of Chicago officials. We are calling on the passing of GAPA ordinance now. View our Mother’s Day ad in the Sun Times.

Mayor Lightfoot—will you hear the demands of the people calling for accountability, justice and community oversight of police and honor your campaign promise? In the spirit of Rekia Boyd, Laquan McDonald and Fred Hampton—let this Mother’s Day be a life affirming call to action. #PassGAPANow
