Silenced: An Unlock Civics Documentary is a story of the democracy that has been created in the United States, that silences millions of people who have been or are currently disenfranchised through incarceration. When people in prison cannot vote, influence policy, or hold elected officials accountable, things like inhumane prison conditions, problematic judges, and “tough-on-crime” policies persist more easily. This project is the work of young Chicago organizers, creatives, academics, and most importantly, those directly impacted by our harmful systems of incarceration and exclusion.
