CRS Training & Canvassing to End Pretextual Traffic Stops

Join CRS throughout July to canvass and collect signatures in the North West area of Chicago for the campaign and petition to end pretextual traffic stops.

We will host training sessions and canvassing opportunities in Logan Square, Humboldt Park, and Hermosa. Participants will receive a script, learn from our CRS Organizing and Policy Team, and work with us to collect signatures.

CRS is a steering committee partner of the Free2Move (F2M) Coalition. Our goal is to obtain 1400 signatures by July 25 to pressure the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability to meet with city leaders about ending pretextual traffic stops.

  1. July 10 – 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM CT at Cafe Mustache

  2. July 12 – 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM CT in Humboldt Park

  3. July 19 – 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM CT in Humboldt Park

  4. July 23 – 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM CT at the Starbucks in Hermosa

Additional Details

  • Participants will have the opportunity to practice the delivery of pitches.

  • Participants will be informed of the street location where they will canvass.

  • Each participant will be added to a virtual group chat for communication.

  • Participants will split up and go door-to-door to collect signatures for approximately 2 hours. Upon return to the initial location, there will be a debrief discussion.

  • Participants will be asked to collect signatures on their own time by encouraging their friends, family, and neighbors to sign the petition.

According to the F2M Coalition, pretextual stops are a racially discriminatory practice “where law enforcement can follow a motorist, bicyclist, or pedestrian until they violate a traffic law, no matter how big or small, and use that traffic infraction as a pretext to stop the person and ‘fish’ for violations of criminal laws.” These stops lead to racial profiling of Black and Brown Chicagoans while further contributing to over-policing.

We need your help to eliminate this unjust practice and hold police officers accountable. Let’s end pretextual traffic stops now!
