A Call to Action for People of Faith: Stand Against Injustice

Beloved Community,

In times of trial and uncertainty, we are called to be watchful, discerning, and bold in our witness for justice.

Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 9495, a bill that could have devastating consequences for the nonprofit organizations that serve as lifelines to our communities and voices for our values.

This bill would give the U.S. Department of the Treasury unprecedented authority to classify nonprofit organizations as “terrorist organizations,” stripping them of their tax-exempt status and threatening their ability to operate. While it is vital to ensure national security, this proposal risks being misused to target groups based on their political, social, or religious beliefs. Faith-based organizations, advocacy groups, and community service providers could face unjust scrutiny, silencing dissent and dismantling critical support networks.

Let us be clear: Nonprofits already have meaningful and strong limitations and oversight!

This legislation is dangerous for our democracy and a direct threat to the prophetic work we are called to do as people of faith. We believe in a God who hears the cries of the oppressed and calls us to speak truth to power. This bill opens the door for oppression, targeting those who challenge the status quo or advocate for systemic change.

We must act. Our faith compels us to be protectors of justice, defenders of the vulnerable, and voices for the voiceless.

Here is what you can do:

  • Join an Issue Team: Community Renewal Society (CRS) will reach out to those in our 5 issue teams when it is time to take faith-rooted action.

  •  Take Action: If this concerns you, consider calling your senators and urge them to oppose this harmful legislation. Remind them that our Constitution protects the right to assemble and the freedom to dissent.

  • Spread the Word: Share this message with your networks, congregations, and communities. Encourage others to stand with us in resisting this dangerous overreach.

We are reminded in Scripture: “Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream” (Amos 5:24). This is our charge—to ensure that justice flows unimpeded, nourishing all who thirst for equity, compassion, and freedom.

Together, we can resist this legislation and safeguard the sacred work of nonprofit organizations, like CRS, across our nation. Let us pray, let us speak, and let us act.

With Love and Lament,
