The Community Commission for Public Safety & Accountability will host its first public meeting on Thursday, September 29th at 6:30 pm at Malcolm X College. The meeting is the culmination of a years-long effort that included tens of thousands of people in communities across the city. As a result of that work, in July 2021, the Chicago City Council passed historic legislation creating a new model for police oversight, accountability, and public safety. The ordinance creates an appointed citywide Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability, with broad power to advance systemic reform. The Commission’s powers include playing a central role in selecting and removing the Police Superintendent, COPA Chief Administrator, and Police Board members; setting; and establishing goals and evaluating progress for CPD, COPA, and the Police Board. The ordinance also creates District Councils, which will be elected in each police district starting next February, and will work to improve policing and public safety in each district.  

During the first public meeting, Chicagoans will have the opportunity to hear directly from Interim Commissioners and weigh in on important public safety issues. “The Commission has been working diligently since its appointment and I am looking forward to our first public meeting so we can work transparently to build trust and obtain important input on the best ways to use public safety resources to positively impact all communities in our city,” said Interim Commissioner Yvette Loizon.
